The Original Moon Watch
The Omega Speedmaster that Buzz Aldrin wore on the moon may have resurfaced in the possession of Stephen Morely. Aldrin's Omega Speedmaster disappeared back in 1971. Morely has initiated court action to try and prove the watch was Aldrin's flown watch, and that it does indeed belong to Morely, or that he can sell the watch. Morely is happy to split the proceeds of the watches sale with the Smithsonian Institute and with Aldrin, both of whom claim ownership. Both Aldrin and the Institue want the watch back in their possession, if it is the real one, and not sold of to the highest bidder. Morely claims to have purchased the watch for $175 in the early 1990's from a college student. The seller claims her father had found the Omega Speedmaster on the beach near Santa Barbara. Morely believes that the watch Aldrin sent to the Smithsonian Institute was not the flown Omega Speedmaster worn on the moon, but was instead a separate watch given to Aldrin by NASA. Morely believes that Aldrin lost the flown one standing on a beach in California while watching Apollo 15 fly over head. This is not the first report of the missing Omega Speedmaster that Aldrin wore to the moon. Over the last 30 years, numerous reports have surfaced about the missing watch, and all have been dismissed as false leads. The original moon watch will always create a fair amount of interest from the general public and from collectors. In many respects the original Omega Speedmaster worn by Aldrin on the moon may well become the Holy Grail to watch collectors. |
