The Moon Watch - Moment in History
On July 20th 1969, the lunar module the Eagle landed on the sea of tranquility on the surface of the moon. This historic date of mans first walk on the moon surface provided many historical firsts. Among them was the birth of the legend of the Moon Watch. When Buzz Aldrin exited the Eagle for his walk on the surface of the moon, wearing his Omega Speedmaster watch, the Omega Speedmaster become irrevocably known as the moon watch. It was Buzz Aldrin's watch that was the first watch worm on the moon. While Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, he did not wear his watch. Armstrong like Aldrin, also had an Omega Speedmaster watch with him on the moon flight. The reason that Armstrong did not wear his Omega Speedmaster on the moon, was that when the Lunar Module landed, Aldrin noticed that the clock had stopped. Armstrong left his Omega Speedmaster on board as a backup for the stopped clock, since it was of course working fine. The legend of the moon watch was hence born. Ever since this important event, the Omega Speedmaster, now renamed the Omega Speedmaster Professional, has been known as the Moon Watch. The value of the title Moon Watch should not be underestimated. The surface of the moon, with temperatures that range from minus 160° to plus 120°C, and the need for the Moon Watch to withstand abrupt pressure changes. The title Moon Watch is the bestowing of a title representing the highest level of engineering and crafts manship. |
