Shokosha watch research institute founded in 1918 was the forerunner of the citizen watch company. In 1924 the first citizen pocket watch was manufactured with the founding of the citizen watch company in 1930. Citizen then manufactured its first wrist watch in 1931. From these early beginnings, citizen has developed both a high quality and large range of watches for the market, making citizen into the largest manufacturer of watches in the world.

The Eco Drive series from citizen is currently its most popular line of watches. The EcoDrive is a quartz watch that recharges it battery from solar energy absorbed through solar panels in the eco drive face dial. This watch never needs to change batteries, but merely needs to be exposed to light (sunlight or artifical) for the battery to recharge and to commence working. Each different Eco Drive model has different functionality, but the watches do work in the dark from the battery reserves (some up to six months in total darkness). The Eco Drive also enhances its battery life with a range of power saving functions, such as delaying the second hand movement (to 4 second moves) when it is too dark to power the watch fully, then catching up the second hand when it is light enough to power the Eco Drive Fully. The Eco Drive range covers outdoors sports models through to elegant ladies styles.
