Casio did not start out as a watch specific company, but instead started as a calculator specific company. Casio really only entered the watch making market after the electronic watch revolution. It was on the strength of expertise in electronics, developed from their calculator development background, that paved the way for Casio to make inroads into the watch making markets.

Casio developed its first calculator in 1957, but it was not until 1974 with the release of the casitron that casio entered the watch making market. The casitron capable of displayig dates with automatic update for long and short months, and automatic adjustment for leap years, was a good first step into the market.
